Lieve mensen hier vandaag aanwezig<\/span><\/p>

Vandaag staan we hier opnieuw. Samen. Voor de zoveelste keer. En misschien voel jij het ook: dat knagende gevoel\u2026<\/span>
<\/span>Dat we ondanks onze inzet, onze acties, onze woorden, nog steeds tegen een muur van onverschilligheid aanlopen.<\/span>
<\/span>Dat de beelden uit de stallen, uit de slachthuizen, uit de vrachtwagens ons blijven achtervolgen \u2014 omdat de realiteit niet verandert. Of toch niet snel genoeg.<\/span><\/p>

En toch\u2026<\/span>
<\/span>Toch zijn we hier.<\/span>
<\/span>We zijn hier omdat we weigeren op te geven.<\/span>
<\/span>We zijn hier omdat we weigeren te zwijgen.<\/span>
<\/span>We zijn hier omdat we weten: elke stem telt. Ook \u2013 en misschien vooral \u2013 die van de stemlozen.<\/span><\/p>

Voor sommigen is het makkelijk de oren en de ogen te sluiten voor het leed dat de dieren in de industrie ondergaan.<\/span>
<\/span>Voor ons niet.<\/span>
<\/span>Wij horen het gekrijs in de stallen.<\/span>
<\/span>Wij horen het gegil uit de slachthuizen.<\/span>
<\/span>Wij horen de moeders roepen, wanneer hun baby’s worden weggerukt.<\/span>
<\/span>Wij kijken niet weg.<\/span>
<\/span>En we willen dat de wereld ook niet meer wegkijkt.<\/span><\/p>

Maar onze strijd stopt daar niet.<\/span>
<\/span>Want als we werkelijk geloven in rechtvaardigheid, in bevrijding en in compassie \u2014 dan mogen we ons niet beperken tot alleen de dieren.<\/span><\/p>

De mainstream vegan movement heeft lang genoeg geprobeerd om \u201cgematigd\u201d te zijn en zich enkel uit te spreken voor de dieren. Maar nu is het tijd om plaats te maken.<\/span>
<\/span>Plaats voor een beweging die strijdt voor <\/span>totale bevrijding<\/b> (total liberation).<\/span>
<\/span>Voor een beweging die weigert te kiezen tussen mensen en dieren.<\/span>
<\/span>Want hoe kan je miljoenen dieren zien sterven in kooien, en tegelijkertijd je rug keren naar de miljoenen mensen die sterven in oorlog, in armoede en in vluchtelingenkampen?<\/span><\/p>

Hoe kan je je verontwaardiging uitschreeuwen over het lijden van een koe, en tegelijkertijd zwijgen over het lijden van mensen in Gaza, in Congo, in Iran, in Libanon, in Sudan\u2026 enzovoort!<\/span><\/p>

Collectieve bevrijding<\/b> zegt: er is geen hi\u00ebrarchie in lijden.<\/span>
<\/span>Er is geen echte vrijheid als we anderen achterlaten.<\/span>
<\/span>De onderdrukking van dieren, van vrouwen, van mensen van kleur, van LGBTQI+ personen \u2014 ze zijn allemaal geworteld in dezelfde systemen.<\/span>
<\/span>In macht. In winst. In controle. In het idee dat sommige lichamen minder waard zijn dan andere.<\/span><\/p>

Als we \u00e9\u00e9n vorm van onderdrukking tolereren, dan normaliseren we het hele systeem dat onderdrukking in stand houdt.<\/span>
<\/span>Dan houden we ongewild het vuur brandend waartegen we juist willen vechten.<\/span><\/p>

Daarom moeten we onze beweging verbinden met andere bewegingen.<\/span>
<\/span>De wereld heeft radicale empathie nodig. Solidariteit. En actie.<\/span><\/p>

Onze kracht zit niet in perfecte keuzes, maar in verbondenheid.<\/span>
<\/span>In het besef: <\/span>niemand is vrij totdat iedereen vrij is<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>

Dus als ze vragen waarom we hier zijn, vandaag, dit jaar, voor de zoveelste keer \u2014 dan is het antwoord simpel:<\/span><\/p>

We zijn hier voor de dieren in de dierindustrie<\/span>
<\/span>Voor de vluchteling zonder dak.<\/span>
<\/span>Voor de vrouwen die bang zijn op straat.<\/span>
<\/span>Voor de onschuldige kinderen die sterven.<\/span>
<\/span> Voor de aarde die uitgeput is.<\/span>
<\/span>We zijn hier voor elkaar.<\/span><\/p>

Mijn bevrijding, is jouw bevrijding, is hun bevrijding.<\/b>
<\/b>Onze strijd is \u00e9\u00e9n strijd.<\/b>

Le jour o\u00f9 j\u2019ai sauv\u00e9 Montana et Baccara<\/b>

<\/b><\/p>

Je n\u2019oublierai jamais le 13 novembre 2019.<\/span><\/p>

Ce jour-l\u00e0, avec mes coll\u00e8gues d\u2019Animaux en P\u00e9ril, nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 appel\u00e9s en urgence \u00e0 Soumagne. Un parc d\u2019engraissement de cochons destin\u00e9s \u00e0 la consommation venait de c\u00e9der : le caillebotis (ce sol ajour\u00e9 sous lequel s\u2019\u00e9coule le lisier)\u00a0 s\u2019\u00e9tait effondr\u00e9 sous le poids des cochons. Une vingtaine d\u2019entre eux ont chut\u00e9 dans la fosse \u00e0 purin. Une quinzaine s\u2019y sont noy\u00e9s. Ils sont morts lentement, br\u00fbl\u00e9s par leurs propres d\u00e9jections, \u00e9touff\u00e9s par l\u2019ammoniaque, seuls. Dix ont surv\u00e9cu. Dix \u00e2mes. Et c\u2019est pour eux que nous \u00e9tions l\u00e0. <\/span>

<\/span><\/p>

Nous avons travers\u00e9 cet \u00e9levage industriel, escort\u00e9s par les regards m\u00e9fiants du propri\u00e9taire et des pompiers. Je revois encore les cadavres calcin\u00e9s par l\u2019acidit\u00e9 des liquides, entass\u00e9s, jet\u00e9s l\u00e0 comme des d\u00e9chets. Puis, nous avons vu les survivants. Ils tremblaient, leur peau br\u00fbl\u00e9e, le regard fig\u00e9. Ils attendaient qu\u2019on les aide. Je ne peux qu\u2019imaginer l\u2019horreur qu\u2019ils ont travers\u00e9e.<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>

L\u2019air \u00e9tait irrespirable. Une odeur de mort, piquante, suffocante. L\u2019ammoniaque me br\u00fblait les yeux. Ce jour-l\u00e0, j\u2019ai d\u00e9couvert, une fois encore, l\u2019indicible souffrance de l\u2019\u00e9levage intensif. Et ce n\u2019\u00e9tait qu\u2019une face du d\u00e9cor.<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>

Sur notre passage, nous avons crois\u00e9 des dizaines de porcelets, entass\u00e9s dans un enclos, les yeux \u00e9carquill\u00e9s, fig\u00e9s dans l\u2019incompr\u00e9hension. Trop jeunes encore pour \u00eatre envoy\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019abattoir, ils attendaient leur tour. J\u2019ai senti mon c\u0153ur se fendre. Mon corps voulait en saisir un, courir, le sauver. Mais je n\u2019avais pas le droit. Mon devoir, \u00e0 cet instant, \u00e9tait de sortir les survivants de la fosse. Je ne pouvais pas risquer ce sauvetage.<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>

Montana et Baccara faisaient partie des dix rescap\u00e9s. Deux cochons adultes, ab\u00eem\u00e9s mais vivants. Ce jour-l\u00e0, ils ont quitt\u00e9 l\u2019enfer. Depuis, ils ont v\u00e9cu en paix au refuge d\u2019Animaux en P\u00e9ril. Pendant six ans, Montana a go\u00fbt\u00e9 \u00e0 la libert\u00e9 : la terre sous son groin, la paille fra\u00eeche dans sa maison, les fruits et l\u00e9gumes distribu\u00e9s par les soigneurs et b\u00e9n\u00e9voles, les bains de boue, la tendresse des visiteurs venus lui adresser des caresses. Elle s\u2019est \u00e9teinte r\u00e9cemment, de vieillesse. Elle a eu une belle fin de vie. Baccara, lui, est toujours l\u00e0. Et quand je repasse devant son enclos, la vision des porcelets que je n\u2019ai jamais pu sauver me traverse comme un \u00e9clair. <\/span>

<\/span><\/p>

Leur bonheur ne gomme pas ce que j\u2019ai vu. Ce jour-l\u00e0, j\u2019ai crois\u00e9 des dizaines de regards que je ne pourrai jamais oublier. Ce jour-l\u00e0, j\u2019ai eu honte d\u2019\u00eatre humaine. Parce que pendant que nous sauvions dix cochons, 11 millions d\u2019autres sont tu\u00e9s chaque ann\u00e9e en Belgique dans les pires conditions. Des cochons enferm\u00e9s, mutil\u00e9s, abattus jeunes, sans jamais avoir connu autre chose que le b\u00e9ton et la peur.<\/span>

Je veux que chacun sache. Je veux qu\u2019on n\u2019oublie pas Montana, Baccara\u2026 et les autres. Ceux qui n\u2019ont jamais eu de nom.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Thank you<\/b> for prioritizing the animals above your free Sunday.<\/span><\/p>

Thank you <\/b>for choosing compassion, justice and kindness over convenience, taste, tradition.<\/span><\/p>

Thank you<\/b> for being – often – the odd one out, when speaking up for animals.<\/span><\/p>

Today, we stand together in Brussels \u2014 the capital of Europe,<\/span>
<\/span>in the center of a continent,<\/span>
<\/span>in the center of a community.<\/span>
<\/span>For the animals.<\/span>
<\/span>For those who, according to some, don\u2019t even <\/span>belong<\/span><\/i> to that community.<\/span><\/p>

Why <\/b>are we here today?<\/span>
<\/span>Because we believe what this community does to animals is <\/span>wrong<\/b>.<\/span>
<\/span>Because we don\u2019t believe that using, exploiting, and killing animals should ever be considered acceptable in a society that once claimed to stand for empathy, peace, and compassion.<\/span><\/p>

Today, we come together \u2014 a small but determined community \u2014 united by a big goal:<\/span>
<\/span>The end of animal agriculture.<\/b>
<\/b>The end of animal suffering.<\/span>
<\/span>The end of a worldview that considers animals as commodities, or doesn\u2019t even consider them at all.<\/span><\/p>

This worldview has tricked most people – but not us.<\/span><\/p>

*<\/span><\/p>

We <\/span>refuse <\/b>to accept that grinding up male chicks alive is somehow \u201canimal welfare compliant\u201d just because it\u2019s legal.<\/span>
<\/span>We <\/span>reject <\/b>a system <\/span>where <\/b>cutting off pigs\u2019 tails is technically illegal \u2014 but practically routine.<\/span>
<\/span>
<\/span>Where <\/b>intelligent marine mammals like dolphins and killer whales are still allowed to be held in tiny tanks \u2014 as long as someone calls it education.<\/span><\/p>

Where <\/b>baby animals are still killed and eaten without ethical concern \u2014 calves, lambs, nearly every pig by the age of six months.<\/span>
<\/span>They\u2019re just babies.<\/span><\/i><\/p>

If it were up to us? That would change. Starting today.<\/b><\/p>

We want a tomorrow where <\/span>no animal <\/b>is born just to be killed for their wool, their milk, their meat.<\/span>
<\/span>A tomorrow where<\/span> no truck<\/b> drives to the slaughterhouse.<\/span>
<\/span>A tomorrow where people <\/span>stop paying<\/b> for suffering dressed up with words like \u201cfree-range\u201d, \u201clocally produced\u201d, \u201craised with love\u201d, \u201cpremium leather\u201d, or \u201csustainable fishing\u201d.<\/span><\/p>

The animal industry is built on <\/span>contradictions<\/b>.<\/span>
<\/span>Animal <\/span>welfare <\/b>ends the moment profit begins.<\/span><\/p>

*<\/span><\/p>

People often forget, it\u2019s <\/span>not about welfare<\/b>. These animals, they have <\/span>a life to live.<\/b><\/p>

They have things to do, people to see, places to be – just as you and me.<\/span><\/p>

They have friends to protect, children to raise, fellows to mourn – just as you and me.<\/span><\/p>

If one day you would be asked to look back on your life, it would probably be an <\/span>eclectic or less eclectic mix of choices, decisions, – circumstances<\/b>. An animal in the industry is not granted <\/span>a single choice <\/b>in its lifetime. Not a tiny taste of freedom – maybe not even a circumstance, except for the concrete walls that separate them from the outside world and the one way ticket to the slaughterhouse.<\/span><\/p>

*<\/span><\/p>

Today we speak out<\/b> for the tens of thousands of sweet, unique, innocent beings who are only brought into this world to be killed several days, weeks or months later – they are rarely granted years.<\/span><\/p>

Today we speak out for compassion over profit<\/b>, because, as soon as money is involved, things get dirty. They get dirty when you have oil, they get dirty when you have land, they get dirty when the flesh on your bones is craved by someone’s tastebuds.<\/span><\/p>

Luckily, things also get dirty<\/b> when you have courage, when you have community, when you persist. <\/span>So let\u2019s-make-things-dirty<\/b> for the animal industry, for the people in power, for those who make a profit out of an animal\u2019s suffering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A couple of weeks ago I saw <\/span>Kae Tempest,<\/b> one of my favourite musicians, at Best Kept Secret festival. One of my favourite songs is called People\u2019s Faces and it\u2019s about change – they sang it at the festival and it made me think of you. The song goes like this:<\/span><\/p>

\u201cIt’s so hard<\/em><\/span><\/p>

We got our heads down and our hackles up<\/span><\/em><\/p>

Our backs against the wall<\/span><\/em><\/p>

I can feel your heart racing<\/span><\/em><\/p>

None of this was written in stone<\/span><\/em><\/p>

The currents fast but the river moves slow<\/span><\/em><\/p>

And I can feel things changing<\/span><\/em><\/p>

Even when I’m weak and I’m breaking<\/span><\/em><\/p>

I stand weeping at the train station<\/span><\/em><\/p>

’cause I can see your faces<\/span><\/em><\/p>

There is so much peace to be found in people’s faces\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>

And Kae Tempest is right: the rivers of change flow slowly. <\/span>But the current is fast<\/b> – look around you, look at each others faces as I am doing now, and feed upon each others courage, each others presence here today, each others devotion to the cause. We are indeed standing at the train station today, almost weeping in my case, and I can feel things changing.<\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s so important, <\/span>so vital to our cause<\/b> that we keep on taking to the streets, even if sometimes it feels\u00a0 \u00a0 symbolic, without a clear goal, mere window dressing. It is not. It is never in vain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

So yes, let\u2019s make dirty change happen, <\/b>but let\u2019s also take care of ourselves and each other in the process, because the animals need us alive and kicking. Kicking against the pricks, kicking against a system that is not speaking out for <\/span>anyone<\/b>. If we keep the current alive, the river will follow – a little faster every day.<\/span><\/p>

Enough with the metaphors, back to the animals.<\/span><\/p>

To the animals,
<\/span>locked up<\/strong> in battery cages,\u00a0
attached<\/strong> to milk machines,
<\/span>forced<\/strong> into places they <\/span>don\u2019t <\/b>want to be in,
<\/span>pushed<\/strong> into trucks where they <\/span>can\u2019t <\/b>see where they\u2019re going,
<\/span>separated <\/b>from their children,
<\/span>left alone<\/b> in empty stables, to starve, to die,
<\/span>to the animals being led to slaughter, next to their friends.<\/span><\/p>

We <\/span>see<\/b> you. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 We <\/span>hear<\/b> you.\u00a0 \u00a0 We <\/span>are on our way.<\/b><\/p>

We will <\/span>organise<\/b> ourselves and become smarter, so that your offspring will not suffer the same fate that you did.<\/span><\/p>

We will make <\/span>noise<\/b>, and scream our lungs out for you.<\/span><\/p>

We will <\/span>march<\/b> for you.<\/span><\/p>

Let\u2019s march.<\/b><\/p>
