In 2013, WAM photographer Jo-Anne McArthur undertook a number of investigations into the factory farming and slaughter of rabbits in Spain with the advocacy group Animal Equality. The investigations took place in the country’s northeast and captured the details of life on a farm for these animals. They live in cramped conditions with many to a cage; the antithesis of natural or wild circumstances. Several farms held rabbits suffering from myxomatosis, a highly infectious and usually fatal viral disease of rabbits, causing swelling of the mucous membranes and inflammation and discharge around the eyes. The images and videos contributed to Animal Equality’s national campaign to help end rabbit farming.
